CRXSH

CRXSH is an electro-acoustic duo made up of trumpeter Ashley Ballat and drummer / producer Odyssey Zelno. Melting together vignettes of crisp dance beats, dark melodies and industrial electronics, the pair present contemporary rhythms and textures with the flow and freedom of fluid improvisation. Odyssey Zelno’s influence from jungle, trap and D&B, mixed with Ballat’s background in experimental avant-garde and extended trumpet technique create a unique new sound on the Australian music scene.

Colleen Wurfel and Band
Colleen Wurfel - Trombone
Jess Mahler - Alto Sax
Gus Cox- Electric Guitar
Will Larson - Tenor Sax
Dylan Van Der Schyff - Drumkit
Ashley Ballat - Trumpet

Colleen Wurfel is a contemporary trombonist and emerging composer based in Naarm. Her practice delves into contemporary improvisation, particularly exploring the connection between texture and melody. She gains inspiration from small and large group collaborations and enjoys working with other artists. Colleen Wurfel completed her bachelor’s degree in Music Performance (Classical Trombone) at Monash University and her Bachelor of Honours in Jazz and Improvisation at the University of Melbourne. Her research delved into the use of graphic notation as a guide for improvisation, mentored by Jordan Murray, Helen Svoboda and Dylan van der Schyff. Last year, she composed six unique graphic scores, during this launch, you will be able to see the graphic scores and here her band play them live for the first time.

Deadnecks x Buttered Loaf @ Cross St

Deadnecks and Buttered Loaf combine forces at Cross St for a psychedelic Sunday afternoon of genre-spanning jams

Come join us for an afternoon of top-shelf local live music at Cross Street Music Hall. The November edition of the Cross St Sunday series will feature Deadnecks and Buttered Loaf, to take you on a wild musical journey. The vibes will be good, the drinks will be cheap & it's family friendly so tell all your friends, snap up some tickets and head on down to Cross St for an outstanding gig!

Here's a bit about your hosts:

DEADNECKS - Spawned from the utmost appreciation for one of the greatest bands to ever do it, Deadnecks started out as a bit of fun jamming between friends, but has quickly grown in to something much more. Taking the iconic music of the Grateful Dead songbook and using it as a vehicle for their expansive jams rooted in psychedelic rock, blues, bluegrass, country and jazz that roll right through you like a steam locomotive burning down the tracks. The passion project aims to revitalise the counterculture movement of the 60's and early 70's. With a growing following of loyal deadheads in tow, keen to hear the spirit and sound of The Grateful Dead encapsulated with a rare vigour and gusto. Although playing the Grateful Dead is their first love, the bands undeniable sound and chemistry has led them beyond the Dead to collaborate and tour locally/internationally with artists such as M.Ward (US), Ella Hooper and Leroy MacQueen.

BUTTERED LOAF - Renegades of rock, foragers of funk, doyennes of dub, rascals of roots, and sorcerers of soul, BUTTERED LOAF deliver performances of blistering, tone-bending musical thuggery that will blow beards, tickle moustaches, and tip food trucks for miles around. Hold on to your expensive miniature tacos, people, BUTTERED LOAF is an institution not to be overlooked. Featuring Sam Cope on keys (Blue King Brown, The Badloves), Yuri Pavlinov on bass (The Bamboos, The Cat Empire, Renee Geyer Band), Selwyn Cozens on drums (Ruby Jones Experience), Gideon Cozens on guitar (Jane Hillson and the Brunswick Troubadours) and Joe Greenway on sax (Spinning Rooms).

Tickets and times

Tickets are $20 presale (b/f incl) or $25 on the door. All proceeds go to the musicians playing, after sound and promo expenses. We believe the value for money of this pricing structure is exceptional and pricing any lower would only serve to devalue the hard work and lifetime commitment of the talented musicians performing for you. That said, we also offer a $15 no-questions asked concession for students, seniors, or anyone who is hard-up right now but still wants to come to a killer gig - we want you there!

Brandon Choi Lesser Key of Songspells + Trip!

Bran Choi presents the freshly written Lesser Key of Songspells for the first time in Melbourne, Australia. Jazz rooted, experimentally tinged, with a distinct folk charm, Bran tells the myriad stories, each a musical vignette, each a poem of sound, of what it means to be a New Yorker, of lifting roots, of flowers and their meanings, of self discovery, and of the joy of dogs.
